Question by : Is it reasonable to NOT date/marry white men b/c they have high divorce and alcoholism rate?
White males have some of the highest rates of divorce, alcoholism, and out of wedlock children(Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Finland, France, etc) lead in Europe with this. IS it bigoted to not get romantically involved with white men b/c of this? If many of them are great, why are 50% or more of them divorced from their first or even second wives to begin with? Surely, it can’t be the woman’s fault all the time, can it?

Best answer:

Answer by Waterdragon
no its not to with the ladies but then i dont think the race of the guy is any real indicator that the relationship will last — you have to closely look at the statistics — you may find the other races dont get married and those that do are unusual and so have a higher survival rate but then there are also 50% of the (white) marriages that survive so you could aim to be in that group —- best wishes

Question by Alex K: How does alcoholism physically kill?
I know this is a very sensitive subject to many, so i apologize if I upset anyone.
For various reasons, I would really like to know what the final stages of liver failure is like. Pretty much, as when someone is dying from alcoholism (liver failure i believe) what would the last few weeks be like. When does jaundice start, is it painful, are they very conscious and lucid? I apologize for asking such a morbid question.

Best answer:

Answer by J B
The liver quits filtering the toxins out of the blood stream and all these toxins get deposited into the skin which can cause severe itching. The skin often turns green during the end stages of liver failure. The abdomen bloats because of ascites which in turn causes difficulty breathing. This is a long, painful, difficult way to diet. You can go to WebMd.com and type in liver failure for more information on this subject. People can be conscious up until their last few hours but every person is different.

Question by Mrs.Reymond: Can you really put someone in alabama in rehab with 3 signatures?
My dad has a really bad drinking problem and he is really bad on pot he has been this was for 20 years and we are all really worried about him he drinks 2 gallons of vodka a day plus beer in between.. He smokes ALOT of pot too and I think he is also doing other drugs but pot being the main one I have always heard all you need is three signatures to sign them into rehab to get help but I dont know how to go about it.
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Best answer:

Answer by Mister Terrific
See if you can’t get someone from social services in AL to advise you. I kind of think the “three signatures” thing is urban legend…unless you’re talking about the signatures of a judge (or three), a doctor, and a cop…or something like that.

Question by g.i.r: People in medical field considering alcoholism as a disease?
Well I know there are people in the medical field who consider alcoholism as a disease, but does everyone in the medical field consider it a disease?
Does the majority consider it?
Also if you know any specific people in the medical field who don’t believe alcoholism is a disease can you please add that?

and last part…what’s your opinion and why?

Best answer:

Answer by rxw
Alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol, and addictions are listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV).

DSM-IV is produced by members of the medical community. So yes, the medical field does consider it a disease. There should be no reason for anyone in the medical field to believe it is not a disease.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine defines addiction as “Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in the individual pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors. Addiction is characterized by impairment in behavioral control, craving, inability to consistently abstain, and diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships. Like other chronic diseases, addiction involves cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death.”

My opinion is yes, it is a disease.

Question by : My husband who is an alcoholic and won’t work so he can stay home and drink, had me me commited to rehab,?
He has made his problem my problem. He went online and researched alcohol abuse and everything I do he makes fit into that catagory. He thinks he absolves himself because he says he is an alcoholic and needs help, but has not sought any type of help. Love him with my soul, do i stay? He also has an anger problem, he can’t say he is wrong or say he is sorry.

Best answer:

Answer by thatartistwin
Nobody can have you “committed” to a rehab unless a judge orders it because of some risk to you or your children. If you went because he demanded it, that is your issue. As for the rest of it, demand couples counseling and individual counseling, If he won’t go, leave him. He does not work, he does not offer anything to the relationship….no point in continuing.

Question by abnjim5: Are smoking members of Alcoholics Anonymous an indication of the effectiveness of 12 Step programs?
Most true alcoholics do not die from alcohol abuse, they die from the complication of years of nicotine addiction. If these alcoholics can use 12 step programs to quit drinking alcohol, why cannot they also use that same AA doctrine for smoking cessation? It makes sense to me that while addressing the area of the brain that is responsible for addiction, and truly claim to have arrested their disposition for addiction, they would also quit smoking as well? What is the ultimate goal in abstaining from addictions to deadly substances like alcohol? Could it be to save their life? Why do 12 step programs brag about success in addiction, and ultimately die from smoking cigarettes, like their founder Bill Wilson? How effective are 12 step programs? Could this be AAers deadly self-will at work?

Best answer:

Answer by starryeyed
And would you perform two life-threatening surgeries on your patient at the same time?
It makes sense, about the brain, but geez, I think you have no idea the level of stress!
I hardly drink, personally, but each time I’ve quit smoking even a third of a pack a day I get depressed for a while.
Do youreally want these people to be fighting alcohol addiction and be depressed by lack of nicotine on top of it?
Have some compassion. It beats out logic by a mile on this one.

Question by jgurl45: is there anything i can do BESIDES alcoholics anonymous?
i’ve been to AA but it just made me feel worse because someone would bring up something at every meeting that really bothered me and i would leave crying every time.

i REALLY have to stop. it got me in trouble with school and my parents are gonna find out and i just really need to stop.

and i do anything i can get my hands on. booze, weed, loritab, codeine, ANYTHING

are there any support groups besides AA…or NA because there are none of those around here. i’m in south florida…so is there anything you can recommend?

oh and if you don’t have anything of substance to say please don’t bother answering.
i should mention that both my parents and both my brothers are alcoholics. they have no idea what is wrong with me and don’t approve of me taking medication for depression.

Best answer:

Answer by spliceit
Just stop.

You are giving into your weaknesses, taking the easy way out. Take a look at why you have to drink/do drugs. What is the underlying problem? What caused you to go down that path and what can you do to help yourself stop the fall. The answers you seek are inside you, not at the bottom of an empty bottle.

I would just like to thank everyone for the thumbs down. However, if you check out the profile for the person who asked this question and look at the questions she has posted you will see there is an under lying problem that has caused her self destructive behaviour. It is that which needs to be addressed.
