Different states have different criteria for a SAC. (Substance Abuse Counselor).
In California, you need a state certification. In some states you need the same education that a therapist needs.
I took a 1-yr compressed course for my certification. By compressed I’m talking 6 hours a day.
You need be familiar with many things such as personality and mood disorders, therapeutic techniques, drugs, alcohol, their histories and effects. The nature of addiction. Counseling, individual and group. Intake counseling. I could go on and on…
Find out the requirements for your location. Check out the classes at your local community college or technical college. Often, they have courses designed to get you certified upon completion.

take human services courses geared toward alcohol counseling. you’ll need some psyche, sociology, and philosophy classes as well to get your bachelor’s. The field pays crap so hope you enjoy the work. just take whats necessary to get your associates at the minimum and more to get your CADC. good luck and good for you for choosing such a helpful career.
