What are some alternatives to Alcoholics Anonymous in Indianapolis, IN?
Question by K-otik: What are some alternatives to Alcoholics Anonymous in Indianapolis, IN?
I need to get help, but I don’t like that fact that AA focuses on religion and admitting you are powerless over yourself. In my opinion, AA is nothing more than a cult.

I’ve been abstinent 11 years and agree with you about AA.

I’m not religious, don’t do the god thing, don’t see the point of the powerless thing. I went to AA for 8 years and got a whole lot out of it, including my sixteen years of sobriety. The book, Living Sober, is their best publication.
I went to AA with the attitude that there HAD to be something worth while hearing, and I was right. I just steered clear of the folks who wanted to shove the standard line down my throat.
Any group I’m part of, I steer clear of people who want to force me to think the way they do — AA was no different. The people who don’t “toe the line” may be a little quiet about it, but they’re there.
Go to meetings, don’t say anything much, listen and look for people who have some time but also don’t talk religion or powerlessness. Ask them some questions, see if you like them.
If you can find two or three people with some time sober who think like you, you’ll be glad, because then you can have support for staying sober while ignoring the parts of the program that, after all, only work for some people anyways.
